5 arrested after Rocky View County 'crime spree' including bear-spray attacks, rammed police vehicle

Five suspects were arrested after what Cochrane RCMP say was a crime spree in Rocky View County that included bear-spray assaults and a police vehicle being rammed by a stolen truck late Monday.

RCMP say 2 officers suffered minor injuries pursuing culprits behind late-night rampage

Five suspects were arrested after what Cochrane RCMP describe as a crime spree involving bear-spray attacks, car prowlings, auto theft and a police vehicle being rammed Monday night.

It started at about 10:40 p.m., when a pedestrian was assaulted and attacked with pepper spray.

A short time later, a woman found three people in her garage rummaging through a vehicle, RCMP said in a release.

When police arrived at that address, the suspects used a truck to ram the RCMP cruiser, slightly injuring an officer. He was treated in hospital and later released.

The suspects then took off on foot. With help from a Calgary police helicopter and a K-9 unit, two women and a boy were tracked down and arrested, RCMP said.

One constable from the Cochrane detachment suffered minor injuries while tracking these suspects.

Shortly after 11 p.m., another resident in Rocky View County came across additional suspects in a truck near her home. They tried to enter her home and may have attempted to drive toward the homeowner, police said. The truck hit the home and caused some damage.

Other residents living nearby also reported that culprits had been seen trying to steal vehicles in the area.

And at about 11:30 p.m. and again at 11:45 p.m. there were two more reports of people being attacked by an assailant with bear spray in Rocky View.

Two more suspects — an adult male and an adult female — were arrested Tuesday morning in connection with the crime spree.

A stolen Dodge Ram pickup was recovered.

Anyone with information about any of these incidents is asked to call the Cochrane RCMP detachment at 403-851-8000 or to contact Crime Stoppers
