Cryptosporidium prompts closure of Prince Albert pool

A popular water park and a pool in Prince Albert, Sask.,have been shut down for the rest of the season because of a parasite that could make people sick.

Several people have tested positive for cryptosporidium after visiting the Kinsmen Water Park and Frank Dunn Pool. The city didn't immediately say how many.

Health officials say people who have beenat the pool or water parksince April and are showing symptoms should see their doctor.

Earlier this week, the city closed the waterslide portion of the water park for maintenance and cleaning.

On Friday, it also announced the closure of the main swimming pool, the whirlpool and the tot pool.

Cryptosporidium, spread through contact with human or animal waste, can causeserious gastrointestinal illness, includingfrequent and severe diarrhea.

The effects are not considered life-threatening in most healthy people, butseniors and young children could be at risk for more serious complications.

There's no risk that the drinking water supply is affected, the city says.
