It appears a fire may have started above the Liberty Market store on Hastings Street, quickly filling the surrounding area with white smoke.

Witnesses told CBC News they saw flames shooting out of the apartments above Liberty Market.

"I seen the smoke first coming, like really thick," said a witness named John. "Then I could see all the fire coming out of it... all the flames just came barrelling out."

At 5 p.m. PT, the fire appeared to be contained.

Const. Brian Montague told CBC News in an email that Vancouver Police "have not been made aware of any victims."

No further information is available at this time.
