Terry Duguid wins Winnipeg South for Liberals

Terry Duguid has been elected in the Winnipeg South riding, CBC News has declared.

With 45 out of 181 polls reporting, Duguid has 59 per cent of the vote over 33 per cent for Gordon Giesbrecht of the Conservatives.

"I promise to work very hard for you in the days and months to come," Duguid said."I am so proud of this community."

The victory comes after three other unsuccessful runs at a federal seat. The fourth time did it for Duguid.

"Tonight belongs to you. This victory belongs to you,"Duguid told his supporters.

Rounding out the pack are the NDP's Brianne Goertzen with almost six per cent and the Green Party's Adam Smith with two per cent.

Winnipeg South had been represented by Conservative Rod Bruinooge since 2006. He announced in January that he wouldnot seek re-election.BeforeBruinooge, the riding was held byLiberal Reg Alcock from 1993 to 2006.

Bruinooge won the last election in 2011 with 52 per cent of the vote, compared to 33 per cent for Duguid and 13 per cent for New Democrat Dave Gaudreau. Voter turnout in Winnipeg South was 68 per cent in 2011.

Duguidranagain for the Liberals this time around while the Tories ran Giesbrecht, a University of Manitoba physiologist best known as "Professor Popsicle" for his research into the effects of extreme environments on the human body.
