Fire in Verdun forces 50 people from homes on Christmas

A fire on 1st Avenue in Verdun forced about 50 people from their homes Friday evening.

A fire on 1st Avenue in Verdun forced about 50 people from their homes Friday evening.

Police were called about the fire at about 7:15 p.m. ET.They say the fire started in a locker on the third floor of a three-story row house, and then spread to the roof and to three other units.

More than 100 firefighters and 29 fire trucks attended the scene. As of about 10 p.m., the fire was not yet fully contained.

In total, 24 apartment units had to be evacuated. No one was injured.

Police say the cause of the fire is not known, but that it is suspicious.
