The snowin Montreal is subsiding, after leaving more than 40 centimetres on the sidewalks and roads, anda major snow-clearing operation beganat 7 p.m. Wednesday, with 2,200 vehicles and 3,000 employees out in force.

Montreal spokespersonPhilippeSabourin saidit will take a minimum of six days to clear the buildup of snow that started falling Tuesday morning.

He advises drivers make sure they park their cars according to the signage.

"By doing that, they will help the city to be more efficient with the operation" and avoid getting a ticket,Sabourin said.

Mayor Denis Coderreis askingpeople stay inside or use the Metro to facilitate work being doneon the roads.

Sabourin said Montrealers have been staying off the streets so far, which has helped the city's snow-clearing efforts.

The cityhas a websitethat allows citizens to track the progress of the operations.
