One of the most common decor questions that Steven gets asked is: "How do I blend decor styles with my spouse?" When Colin and Steph, a couple who just moved in together, came to him with this exact decor dilemma, he came up with solutions to help them blend their personal design styles. Colin is modern, while Steph is glam. How can they compromise?

Here what our resident design expert recommended:

1. (Wall)cover it

Wallpaper can help glam up a space without making it look like your grandma's living room. This "Lotus" paper from Farrow & Ball comes in tons of different colours, meaning you can go bold or classic, depending on your personal styles. The wallpaper adds the illusion of fluid movement, so pairing it with a structured, modern couch with clean lines (like the one pictured above) will help maintain a healthy balance.

2. Use warm metals

Metallics are a fool-proof way add some shimmer to your space. Picking rose-gold pieces like the wire table, pillows, and centrepiece pictured above, give your room a warm glow without going over the top. Add in a metal trunk with an industrial edge, like this coffee table, to juxtapose the golden tones.

3. Texture, texture, texture

Mix sleek surfaces with more adventurous accents to keep things looking clean while still having a little fun. Black lacquer pieces, like the lamp and bedside table above, will keep your space current. Sprinkle in a wool rug and knit pillows to add some personality to the room.

4. Round it out

Nothing says modern quite like white marble! A marble coffee table, like the one shown above, keeps your room structured thanks to those clean edges. Fill out the space with rounded sofas and chairs to achieve that necessary ying and yang.
