Between keeping them happy, busy and out of trouble, caring for kids can be a real handful. Here are some DIY solutions that will help alleviate some of your parental pain.

DIY sidewalk chalk

Kids love using chalk, but if your little munchkins are running through theirs like crazy, why not make some at home? This craft can be a fun activity for your youngsters just make sure they're wearing aprons, as chalk-making can get messy.

What you'll need:

  • Plaster of Paris
  • Tempera paint in colour of choice
  • Food colouring (optional)
  • Paper towel (or gift wrap) roll

Directions:

  1. Mix two parts Plaster of Paris with one part water.
  2. Stir till smooth.
  3. Add some tempera paint in any colour you want.
  4. If you want to make multi-coloured chalk, you can also add in some food colouring just keep in mind, it might stain your sidewalk!
  5. Stir some more and then pour your mixture into a paper toweltubethat you've duct taped.
  6. Leave it to harden and dry overnight.

Safety bracelet

You can make a cute little piece of beaded jewelry that includes some valuable information for your tot, mixing fashion and function.Use number beads in your design featuring your cell, so if your mini-me ever wanders off or are lost, they are outfitted with your phone number.

What you'll need:

  • Beads, including number beads (if you can't find these at your craft store, they are easy to find online)
  • Elastic cord
  • Glue

Directions:

  1. String beads together on plastic cordin desired pattern, including your phone number.
  2. Tie the ends of the plastic cord.
  3. Dab the ends with glue to secure them.

Homemade ouchiepack

Kids are constantly running around, falling down and hurting themselves. A quick trick to help ease your little ones' aches, pains and bruises actuallyusesmarshmallows but they're not for eating. Marshmallows are a great alternative to a hardplastic ice pack. Simply grab a bag and toss them in the freezer. Then, apply to the affected area once cold. Marshmallows don't freeze, so your ouchie pack will be the softest one around!

Permanent marker eraser

If your child is an artist and loves to draw EVERYWHERE, even with permanent marker, this hack is sure to restore some of your damaged furniture. All you need is a little toothpaste!

Directions:

  1. Apply a thick layer of toothpaste directly on the marker stain.
  2. Using a damp cloth, rub the toothpaste into the marker spot until it's gone, wiping in the direction of the wood grain, not against it.
  3. Repeat step 2 if necessary.
