Prior to The Current, Anna Maria worked with CBC Television. She was a co-host of CBC News flagship investigative program, The Fifth Estate , a political reporter in Ottawa, and a foreign correspondent with postings in Berlin, London, Jerusalem and Washington, DC. Her international work saw her cover the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union, the war in Bosnia and the breakup of the former Yugoslav republics, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, before moving to Washington to cover US politics under the Clinton administration.

Anna Maria has earned numerous awards over her decades-long career at the CBC. With her at the helm, The Current in 2012 was awarded the prestigious Canadian Journalism Foundation Excellence in Journalism Award in the large media category. She also has been the recipient of two Gemini awards and a Life Achievement Award from Women in Film and Television Toronto.
