THE PASSIONATE EYE is Canada’s longest-running national showcase for independent documentaries. For 22 years it’s provided Canadians with a critical window on the world, exploring international events and people through timely and provocative award-winning documentaries. Today, THE PASSIONATE EYE remains one of the only documentary programs in Canada where viewers can still see a selection of the world’s best and most newsworthy political and social issue documentaries.

Season Highlights for 2014/15 include:

India’s Daughter
Feature film director Leslee Udwin investigates the rape case that shocked India and the world. The film pays tribute to Jyoti Singh, who in December 2012 went to see the movie Life of Pi with a male friend. As they returned home on a public bus, she was gang-raped and brutally murdered by six strangers. With unprecedented access to the rapists in prison, the film examines the values of a society where brutality against women is so widespread. It follows the events leading up to the incident and the aftermath: the arrests, the protests and riots, and the political ramifications in India.

Revenge of the Electric Car
Chris Paine’s sequel to Who Killed the Electric Car? follows the auto industry’s high-stakes race to build the next generation of the electric car. With behind-the-scenes access to GM, Nissan, Tesla Motors, and the visionaries behind the companies, we witness the fierce competition the industry is now waging to not only build the best electric vehicle, but win the hearts and minds of car buyers around the world. Narrated by Tim Robbins.

112 Weddings
Over the past two decades, acclaimed documentary filmmaker Doug Block has supported his career with a side business of videotaping weddings. Long curious about which marriages were able to sustain, and which would flame out, he tracks down and interviews some of the more memorable of his 112 wedding couples, creating a vibrant, often funny, and insightful portrait of the state of marriage and the relationships of the couples.
