Tom Power Named New Host of q

Aug 15, 2016

CBC Radio One today announced that Tom Power, current host of Radio 2 Morning on CBC Radio 2, has been named the new host of q. Shadrach Kabango (Shad) will explore new creative opportunities including a new radio show with CBC. Power will take the helm at q in October, with more specific timing to be confirmed at a later date. Shad will host his final show tomorrow, August 16.

"We are refocusing and reinvesting in q to ensure it continues to evolve and deliver what our audience wants from CBC Radio's flagship music, arts and cultural program," said Susan Marjetti, executive director of CBC Radio English Services. "Tom is a great fit for q. We look forward to exploring a new show with Shad that plays to his strengths and passion for music. Shad remains part of our CBC family."

"Needless to say, I am absolutely thrilled to be joining the q team," said Power. "It's a privilege to be given the opportunity to host a show that celebrates our music and culture and means so much to Canadians."

"Well, my time at q has come to a close," said Shad. "It's been an honour and a JOY to serve in this role! Countless fascinating guests and don't even get me started on my colleagues: smart, funny, and dedicated is just the beginning. The show will continue and is in great hands with Tom Power - an excellent host and a great guy. My relationship with the CBC remains strong. We're discussing the possibility of developing a new show together. In the meantime and either way, I'm looking forward to having more time to put into music and I'm grateful for an amazing experience. Thanks for your love and support on this adventure!"

An award-winning musician and highly regarded broadcaster, Power is best known as the host of Deep Roots and Radio 2 Morning on CBC Radio 2. Hailing from St. John's, Newfoundland, he started his career programming folk music on college radio, quickly moving on to work at the local private radio level as a news reporter. In 2008, at the age of 21, Power joined CBC as the host of Deep Roots and was named host of Radio 2 Morning in 2011. A new host for Radio 2 Morning will be announced at a later time.

Award-winning journalist Jennifer Moroz will assume leadership of the program as executive producer. A seasoned, respected leader, Moroz brings a wide range of innovative, industry-leading experience to q, including serving as producer of The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos and executive producer of The Current. She recently completed a prestigious William Southam Journalism Fellowship at The University of Toronto's Massey College.
