Gordon Lightfoot to join U.S. Songwriters Hall of Fame

Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot is being inducted into theNew York-basedSongwriters Hall of Fame.

The 73-year-old troubadour will be feted at an awards dinner in New York on June 14.

Fiveother songwriters will be inducted:

• Bob Seger, the rocker associated with the songs Night Moves and Against the Wind.
• Don Schlitz, a country singer who wrote The Gambler and When You Say Nothing at All.
• Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones, musical theatre writers of The Fantasticks and the musical Our Town.
• Jim Steinman, who wrote for rock, film and musical theatre.

The Orillia, Ont.-born Lightfoot is credited with helping define the folk-pop sound of the 1960s and 1970s.

His timeless hits include Early Morning Rain, Sundown, If You Could Read My Mind, Carefree Highway and The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald.

Hall of fame chairman Jimmy Webb says each of this year's inductees "has created a unique range of extraordinary contributions."
