1st CSeries commercial flight with passengers took off in Zurich and landed in Paris Friday

The first commercial flight of Bombardier's new CSeries jets took off from Zurich's airport to go to Paris with a plane full of customers on Friday.

Swiss Flight 638 took off from Kloten airport in Zurich a little after noon local time, and touched down at Charles De Gaulle outside Paris a little over an hour later.

According to Switzerland-based newspaperNeue Zuercher Zeitung, there was a delay before takeoff due to a technical problem related to the power supply. Because it is a new plane, it took longer to fix, the paper reported.

"I am extremely proud that we are the first airline in the world to put this totally newly-developed aircraft into service," Swiss'schief operating officer Markus Binkert said. "The Bombardier CS100 is a class act in every respect: comfort, economics and environmental credentials. And its service entry today ushers in a new era in short- and medium-haul air travel, for our customers in particular."

The plane's development and unveiling has been plagued by problems.

Originally envisioned to take to the skies in 2013, the CSeries is now several years late and several billion dollars over budget. Swissis the first commercial customer for the jet, which Bombardier says it much more efficient, quiet and luxurious that any other plane of a similar size on the market.

In total, Swiss has ordered 15 of the smaller CS100 jets, and 15 more of the larger CS300 variety, all of which are expected to be delivered within the next 12 months.

The first delivery of the larger CS300, which received Transport Canada certification just last week, is expected some time between now and the end of the year for the first customer, airBaltic.
