Abrosimo's criminal record shocks neighbours

The man charged in the abduction and sexual assault of an 11-year-old Langley girl had served time for a previous sexual assault – and that has some people outraged.

The man charged in the abduction and sexual assault of an 11-year-old Langley girl had served time for a previous sexual assault and that has some people outraged.

Brian Edward Abrosimo's neighbours in a quiet Surrey neighbourhood want to know why they're only learning about his past sex offence now.

"We have a lot of children here, the same age between seven and 12 years old, and a lot of them do play out in the cul-de sac," says Gregg Smith. "So yes, we would have liked to have known, definitely."

Smith, who has two children, says past events in the neighbourhood have put parents on edge.

"We had the Heather Thomas issue here two years ago. That's not far from hereand we're very shocked and concerned that this happened here."

Ten-year-old Heather Thomas was attacked and killed by a neighbour back in 2000, and her body dumped in Alouette Lake.

Surrey RCMP Const. Mark Searle says police do sometimes inform the public of a known sex offender living in their area. But he says that only happens in certain cases.

Searle says police must apply to the courts for permission to release the information and they will only do so if they believe the danger to the public is greater than a sex offender's right to privacy.
