Girl killed in Coquitlam crash was 13 years old, RCMP say

The RCMP has confirmed a 13-year-old girl died in a multi-vehicle crash Monday afternoon that involved five children, one of whom was killed and anotherwho wasseriously injured.

The 13-year-old girl killed in a multiple-vehicle crash in Coquitlam Monday was walking to the park with four other kidswhen the tragic collisionoccurred.

That's the belief of Coquitlam RCMP, which confirmed the age of the girl who died Tuesday. Police also confirmed that a six-year-old boy was seriously injured.

Two cars collided at the intersection of Mariner Way and Riverview Crescent at approximately 2:49p.m. PT.

RCMP said the impact caused one of the cars to spin onto a raised traffic island where the five children were standing, waiting to cross the street.

The 13-year-old girl, from Coquitlam, and a six-year-old boy were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Soon after arriving atthe hospital, police said, the girl died.

Police saidtwo other girls, 17 and 10, were on the traffic island when the crash occurred, as well as another boy, aged11.

Cars involved seized for investigation

Both drivers involved are co-operating with police.

Investigators do not believe impairment or distraction are a factor in the incident. They are looking into the role speed played, however.

RCMP said a grey Dodge Charger was travelling southbound on Mariner Way intending to turn left onto Riverview Crescent when it collided with ablack BMW travelling northbound on Mariner Way.

A previous news release from RCMPsaid three vehicles were involved in the collision.However, further investigation revealed that was not the case.

The area around the intersection,a hilly partof the city filled with single-family homes and forested areas, was shut down for hours as investigators worked.
