Fraser Health has reported a COVID-19 outbreak at anindependent living facility in Burnaby, B.C., after a staff member tested positive for the disease.

In a statement, the health authority said the employee at Derby Manor is in self-isolation at home.

Derby Manor is an independent living facility that shares a campus witha long-term care facility, Fraser Health said. The employee workedonly in the independent living facility.

"Enhanced control measures have been put in place at the site and Fraser Health is working with staff to identify anyone who may have been exposed and is taking steps to protect the health of all staff, residents and families," Fraser Health said in a written statement.

Visitors restricted

A Fraser Health spokesperson did not provide any information on the employee's condition, citing privacy.

In light of the positive test,Fraser Health said it's restricting visitors throughout the entire campus and limitingthe movement of staff and residents.

Cleaning and infection control has been "enhanced," the health authoritysaid. All staff and residents are being screened twice a day, meaning they will have their temperatures taken and be asked questions about symptoms and recent travel.

"After being screened, if a person presents with symptoms, they will be advised to get tested and self-isolate," the spokesperson wrote in an email.

Residents, their families and staff are being notified, Fraser Health said, and normal staffing levels are being maintained.

Fraser Health says it will declare an outbreak in long-term care, assisted living or independent living if even a single resident or staff member tests positive due to the risk of more seniors catching the disease.
