Five tips to help you cook a romantic feast at home

If the myriad of window displays with roses, chocolates, and paper hearts wasn't enough of a warning that Valentine's Day was coming up...don't worry, chef consultant Tina Fineza is coming to your rescue.

She usually helps restaurants create their menus, but today, she helps the CBC's Elaine Chau come up with a sizzling menu that's sure to turn up the heat on your relationship. Here are 5 tips to get you started:

  1. Start the meal with something elegant and simple, like oysters. Just four per person will do, then it won't break the bank!
  2. Decide on your entree by choosing your protein first. That way, it's much easier to pick what side dishes to do. Tina suggests something light like seafood, so you don't get bloated during your romantic evening.

  3. Don't forget about colour. Pick fruits and vegetables that have tinges of red (the colour of love) -- it'll add a pop to the plate.
  4. Sweeten up your sweetheart with a little home-made dessert! Buy a pre-made plain cake or loaf, and dress it up with macerated berries, whipped cream, and shaved chocolate.
  5. Have a game plan when you head into the kitchen. Get some of the prep done (like cutting the vegetables) before your guest arrives. That way, you maximize the time you have with your sweetheart.
