North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP said in a statement Tuesday that 28-year-old Ryan Mesa has been charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing death.

Police were called to the Trans Canada Highway between Green Road and Beverly Avenue just before 10 p.m. PT on April 18, where emergency crews found the youthdead at the scene.

The B.C. Coroners Service attended and confirmed her death. Police said the vehicle that hit her was not at the scene, and the highway was closed for several hours while they investigated the circumstances.
