Legalize pot, says Mayor Campbell

Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell says the proposed federal legislation to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana doesn't go far enough.

Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell says the proposed federal legislation to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana doesn't go far enough.

The mayor says he wants to see the outright legalization of pot.

"I think we should legalize it, we should tax it to the max and take all the money that we get from it and put it straight into health care.

"That way you don't have to worry about grow ops," he says. "If you want to grow yourself a little bit of marijuana, you grow it. Who really cares, quite frankly?"

As for large-scale pot producers, Campbell a former RCMP drug officer who now chairs the city's police board says the new law achieves nothing.

He says big-time growers will continue to risk arrest despite tougher penalties written into the new legislation.

"As long as you have that huge profit for, let's say face it, not all that much risk, it's just going to continue on," says the mayor.

He also says the new legislation won't do much to improve community safety, because it doesn't address the issues of grow op violence and gang drug wars.
