More Pemberton-area flooding possible this weekend

Rainfall expected in the region around Whistler and Pemberton, B.C., beginning Thursday night could bring more flooding to the area, says Environment Canada.

Last weekend, heavy rainfall throughout the Sea-to-Sky corridor led to widespread flooding stranding dozens of people and destroying several properties.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement warning that a cold front sweeping across the South Coast could produce rainfall at the rate of six to eight millimetres an hour with up to 40 millimetres of rainby Friday morning.

It says even though the amount of rain is moderate, it may not be absorbed into the ground due to the current soil conditions and there could be localized flooding and debris flows.

Regional officials have said the hot, dry summer, which hasreduced the soils's capacity to absorb water, likely led to last weekend's flooding.
