New BC Place roof closer to completion

The new, retractable roof above BC Place Stadium is one step closer to completion.

Crews lifted the last of the 36 supporting masts into place Thursday afternoon.

The massive 50-metre high masts each weigh 240 tonnes and will support the new fabric roof of the downtown Vancouver stadium.

The next step in the project includes installing a cable net to anchor the retractable roof -- and officials estimate all the work should be complete byfall.

The $565-million renovation to the stadium will be completed in the fall of 2011, in time forthe Grey Cup, which Vancouver is scheduled to stage Nov. 27.
