Simons announces NDP leadership bid

Powell River-Sunshine Coast New Democrat MLA Nicholas Simons has officially announced that he's in the running for the party's top job.
Powell River-Sunshine Coast New Democrat MLA Nicholas Simons officially announced Wednesday that he's in the running for the party's top job.

Simons promised a new voice and a new approach to politics that ensures the people are engaged in the democratic process.

He was first elected the Powell-River Sunshine Coast MLA in 2005. He has a background in criminology and music theory.

Simons has served as Chair of the Caucus Social Policy Committee, Critic for Tourism, Sport and the Arts, and as Critic for the Ministry for Children and Family Development

He was one of about a dozen New Democrat caucus members who staged a revolt that toppled Carole James as party leader in December.

He joins marijuana activist Dana Larsen as the only candidates so far in the NDP leadership race.

The party plans to hold a leadership vote to replace James on April 17 at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

Several potential contenders have expressed interest in the job, including Fraser-Nicola MLA Harry Lali and Port Coquitlam-Burke Mountain MLA Mike Farnworth, but no one else has officially entered the race.
