Speeding cyclist gets ticketed in Saanich school zone

A Victoria-area cyclist was apparently not pleased about getting a ticket for allegedly flying through a school zone on Wednesday morning, but police say the law applies to everyone on wheels.

A Victoria-area cyclist was apparently not pleased about getting a ticket for allegedly flying through a school zone on Wednesday morning, but police say the law applies to everyone on wheels.

The cyclist was caught in one of six speed traps set up by Saanich Police Wednesday morning.

"We were stopping motorists, but we couldn't help but noticecyclists coming through our speed zones were in excess of the speed limit," saidSgt. John Price.

One of those cyclists was flagged down and received a ticket,Price said, adding that it did come as a surprise to the rider of the bike.

Priceshared a warning on social mediato all cyclists to watch their speed afternabbing the free-wheeler.

"The rules apply equally to a cyclist as theydoto a driver of a vehicle," he said.

"Are there conflicts between cyclists and pedestrians? Yes there are. We have gone to those crashes."

Police did not say how much the cyclist was finedor how fast the person was going, but speeding in a school zone can cost as much as $483.
