Clark proposes new B.C. holiday

Clark is proposing what she calls Family Day on the third Monday of February, which is similar to holidays in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Prince Edward Island.

"One of the keys to strong families is having quality time together," Clark said in a written release.

"In British Columbia, families will go 111 days this yearfrom New Year's to Easterwithout a chance to unwind and spend time together. I think Family Day would be a great chance for families to renew themselves and a reward for all the hard work that is done by B.C. workers."

Clark said a February holiday could boost tourism and other family-related entertainment and increase worker productivity in the days after a break.

She acknowledged some businesses have concerns about another day off and said she is eager to speak with the business sector about the issue. "Business has some legitimate concerns so I want to talk with them," she said.

"I want to talk with families and see what they think and if all agree the concept of a holiday in the middle of the winter makes sense we can work together to find a way to make it happen."
