3 fires set in Stanley Park

Fires at squatter campsites kept Vancouver firefighters busy around midday Thursday.

No injuries and no arrests in apparent arsons

Vancouver firefighters have had to put out fires at three separate locations in Stanley Park, the fire department says.

Spokesman Gabe Roder said the department received multiple 911 calls just after 11:30 a.m. PT and found fires at three "squatter campsites" in the park. "Firefighters arrived on scene to find tents, tarps and belongings on fire in the three separate campsites and quickly extinguished the fires," Roder said.

Tarps and other belongings were found destroyed at the torched campsites. (CBC)

The campsites were about 100 metres apart, he said.

Roder said there were also reports of an explosion at one scene, likely caused by an overheated propane canister.

Investigators have determined that the fires were in all probability deliberately set.

No injuries were reported.

Stanley Park has for years beenoccupied by a small population ofhomeless people.
