Surrey RCMP searching for driver they say fled scene of fatal crash

Police are looking for a driver they say fled the scene of a Saturday night crash in Surrey, B.C., that left one person dead.

A northbound black Toyota Corolla turned left into the path of a southbound white Ford Mustang at the intersection of128thStreetand 82ndAvenuein the Newton area around 9:24 p.m. PT, Surrey RCMP said Sunday morning.

"The subsequent collision caused significant damage to both vehicles," RCMP said in a news release.

The adult male passenger of the Corolla was taken to the hospital where he later died, Mounties said.

Police say the driver of the Corolla, described as a South Asian male in his 20s wearing a grey hoodie and jeans, fled the scene on foot.

The male driver of the Mustang also went to hospital with minor injuries, according to RCMP.

B.C. Emergency Health Services confirmed four ambulances responded to the incident and two people were taken to the hospital.

RCMP say the investigation is still in the "very early stages," and alcohol and speed have not been ruled out as contributing factors.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident including dash cam footage on 128th Streetbetween 80th and 84th Avenuebetween 9:20 and 9:30 p.m. on Saturday to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.
