Surrey's latest shooting victim an innocent bystander in ongoing conflict, police say

Police have identified the latest shooting victim in Surrey, B.C., and say while there's no evidence to suggest he had any direct connection to an ongoingconflict in the city, hewas in a car with someone who did.

"What we do know is that the man who survived the shooting does have a family member connected to the conflict," said Staff Sgt. Jennifer Pound with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

Jatinder "Michael" Sandhu, 28, died following a double shooting ata Surrey home on Saturday.Homicide investigators said neither he nor the other victim havea criminal record.

Sandhu and the other victim, also a man, were in a car parked in the home's driveway when they were shot.

The victim in the driver's seat of the vehiclesurvived and is expected to fully recover.

Pound said Sandhu's death shouldbe a reminder of the dangers that come with having a friend or family member involved in a criminal lifestyle.

"We are warning those individuals that know they are hanging out or are associating with people entwined in this conflict to be very careful."

"From the homicide perspective, I know that we're seeing violence escalate, and we're seeing innocent people such as Mr. Sandhu become a victim to this crime."

Pound said investigators believe the shootings were targeted, but it's still not clear as to whether or not the two victims were theintended targets.
