Police find woman's body after searching Victoria-area lake

Witnesses reported seeing the woman go under the water while swimming but did not see her resurface, according to RCMP

Mounties have found the body of a 49-year-old woman in a lake near Victoria after a two-day search.

Officers first responded to the report of a potential drowning inPrior Lake, located in Thetis Lake Regional Park just outside Langford, B.C., around 1:45 p.m. PT on Saturday.

"Witnesses reported seeing a woman swimming in the area who saw her go under the water, but sadly, she did not resurface," reads the statement.

In an update on Monday, West Shore RCMP said the death did not appear to be suspicious.

BCEHSsays it sent three ambulances to Prior Lakeafter receiving a call shortly before1:40p.m. Saturday. No one was taken to the hospital.

RCMP said they would work with the B.C. Coroners Service to investigate the death, and no further details will be released Monday.

"Prior Lake and the surrounding trail in Thetis Lake Regional Park, which had been closed since Saturday afternoon, will reopen shortly," said Cpl. Nancy Saggar at around 3 p.m. PT Monday. "We thank the public for their patience and send our condolences to the family and friends of the woman."
