At least 1 worker injured after 'ignition' at Tilbury LNG facility in Delta, B.C.

WorkSafeBC says it's looking into an incident at FortisBC'sTilburyLNG facilityin Delta, B.C., that injured at least one contractor.

FortisBC says a "brief ignition" occurred on Saturday around 10:30 a.m. PT from a refrigerant line before workers at the siteextinguished it. Local police and fire departments also responded.

"One member of the contractor team on site was treated for injuries and released," said FortisBC in a release.

The companyis currently expanding the plant, which stores liquified natural gas and converts it to gas vapour to supply customers in the Lower Mainland.

The $400-million expansion includes a new storage tank and additional liquefaction equipment. The incident happened at the site of the expansion.

WorkSafeBC says it was notified of the incident and that possiblytwo workers were injured. The agency has assigned an officer to follow up with FortisBC.

"It's important to remember that this incident was limited to the refrigerant portion of the plant and did not pose a danger to anyone outside the plant," said FortisBC in its release.

The company says it's conducting an investigation with the contractor to determine the cause of the ignition.

Existing operations at the original Tilbury plant, which has been in operation since 1971, were not impacted.
