Hot Air's hot picks for the 2016 Vancouver Jazz Festival

It's a sure sign of summer.

Each year in June, the annual TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival pulls together 1,800 musicians from around the world and around the corner to play over 300 shows around the city, with half of them free.

Hot Air host Margaret Gallagher shines a spotlight on just a few of the hot tickets and cool free concerts.

A Salute to Dal Richards, June 25, 12:30 p.m., Downtown Jazz Georgia Street, FREE

A heartfelt tribute to Vancouver's beloved "King of Swing," who passed away on New Year's Eve 2015just shy of his98th birthday and 80th consecutive New Year's Eve performance. The Dal Richards Orchestra celebrates the man and his music.

Oliver Jones Trio, June 25, 8 p.m., Vogue Theatre

The legendary piano player began his career over 60 years ago, and at 81 still wows audiences with his masterful playing. This could be your last chance to see the much-decorated Jones, who plans to retire after this tour.

Marcin Lasilewski Trio Spark of Life,June 26, 9:30 p.m., The Ironworks

The Polish composer is known for his cinematic compositions and innovative takes on Ennio Morricone, Herbie Hancock and the Police. Co-presented by Poland's Jazztopad Festival.

Steve Kaldestad & The Renee Rosnes Trio, June 27 & 28, 8 p.m., Frankie's Jazz Club

In-demand Vancouver saxophonist Kaldestad teams up with award-winning pianist Rosnes, who left Vancouver for New York and found international acclaim. Hear their new album together in an intimate setting.

Mike Rud Miniatures/Two Much Guitar, June 29, 8 p.m., Frankie's Jazz Club

A double bill with three award-winning guitarists. Mike Rud uses his voice and guitar to create a "miniature" band with a fresh take on jazz classics, while Two Much Guitaris the combined swingin' force of Oliver Gannon and Bill Coon two of Canada's finest jazz guitarists.

Amanda Tosoff WordsProject, June 30, 8 p.m., Frankie's Jazz Club

Toronto-based pianist returns to her hometown to share her latest project, a reflective outing that incorporates poetry from Wordsworth, Laura Lush, Tim Bowling and Edgar Allen Poe.

Laila Biali, July 1 930 p.m., Granville Island - Performance Works FREE

North Vancouver-raised, New York-based Biali is known for her clear voice, formidable piano chops, and ability to craft great jazz out of pop classics. Her latest album features original songs that move effortlessly between both genres.

Cory Weeds Quintet featuringTerrell Stafford, July 1 & 2, Frankie'sJazz Club, 8 p.m., July 3, 3:30 p.m.,David Lam Park,FREE

Prolific musician and impresario Cory Weeds teams up with one of the giants of contemporary jazz, trumpeter Terrell Stafford. They'll do two ticketed shows at Frankie's, then cap off the festival with a free show at the weekend festivities at David Lam Park.

Gregory Porter, July 2, 8 p.m., Vogue Theatre

Grammy Award-winning vocalist wraps his smooth, smoky baritone around soulful originals. "He's probably my favourite male vocalist right now," enthuses festival organizer John Orysik.

Dan Brubeck Quartet, July 3, 9 p.m., Granville Island -Performance Works

Gifted drummer Dan Brubeck draws on music and words of his parents Dave and Iola Brubeck in this compelling labour of love with his talented B.C.-based band. A highlight is the soulful voice of bassist Adam Thomas.
