Beware of Banff bear as Halloween approaches, Parks Canada warns

Bear spray might not be part of the traditional Halloween festivities but this year, Parks Canada officials in Banff are advising parents of trick-or-treaters to have some on hand after multiple grizzly sightings around town.

A bear warning is in effect for the town. And, with Halloween not far off, residents and visitors are being advised to take extra precaution before heading out for the night.

"Travel in groups and have adult supervision and consider carrying bear spray, even within the town site," said Parks Canada wildlife biologist David Gummer.

The bear has been spotted on local streets, frequenting residents' yards and backlanes, peering into backyards, eating grass on front lawns and rummaging around the fruit tree and bushes in town, Gummer said.

As well, the plethora of pumpkins on front porches and laneways makes for a scrumptious adventure for the bear Gummer says they consider the Halloween staple a very tasty treat so residents are advised to keep the pumpkins indoors.

The bear does have a radio collar and park officials say they are trying to keep tabs on the animal.

Still, Gummer says people should be on high alert.
