Calgary community groups fight northwest cell tower plan

Calgarians from two local community associations are resisting a plan to more than double the height of a cellphone tower on the corner of Chelsea Street and 14th Street northwest.

Cellphone providers Telus and Rogers would also have access to the tower.

Kris Olsen, president of the Rosemont Community Association, said the old tower would have to be taken out because the proposed 35-metre tower is "huge."

"For all of us who arent metre people, it's 120 feet, equivalent to a 10-storey building," said Olsen.

The communities say the tower could be moved closer to the nearby Confederation Park Golf Course, land owned by the city, because Calgary recently changed its policy allowing for towers on public land.
