Calgary Entertainment: 6 things to do this weekend

When it comes to having fun in Calgary, February does have a few things going for it. There's Valentine's Day for the couples, reading week for the post-secondary students and Family Day for everyone else.

Star Trek exhibition

There's a new Star Trek exhibit at Telus Spark that launches this weekend. Levar Burton and Jonathan Frakes from Star Trek: The Next Generation will be on hand for the Friday night preview, which unfortunately, is sold out. But The Starfleet Experience runs until June 4 so you've got plenty of time to check it out, if you're so inclined.

Calgary Opera

The utterly Alberta operaFilumena is another top pick for the weekend.

This is a true story of bootlegging, murder and an execution in the Crowsnest Pass during the prohibition era in the 1920s. This Calgary Opera production by John Estacio and John Murrell was first staged in 2003 and is back to celebrate Canada's 150th birthday.

Filumena runs at the Jubilee Auditorium Feb. 4, Feb. 8 and Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Family affair

Confederation Park is celebrating the sesquicentennial a bit early, this Saturday. The folks at the Confederation Park 55+ Activity Centre are hosting a multicultural fair and birthday party for one and all.

There will be Scottish dancing, Serbian folk dancing, Colombian dancers, Assamese singers and dancers, Ukrainian dancers, Azerbaijan dancers, Russian singing and muchmore.

It's a family-friendly event, so there will also be activities for the kids. And what's a party without cake? (There will be cake).

It's all happening this Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The activity centre is at 2212 13th St. N.W.

For the little ones

There is a special storytelling show this weekend that is sure to please younger children.

On Sunday, the Cantar Children's Choir and the Juno-nominated Land's End Ensemble will bring The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses, an award-winning picture book by Paul Goble, to life with the help of Dean Burnam and his puppets.

There are two performances, one at 1 p.m. and a second at 3:30 p.m in the Eckhardt-Gramatt Hall, Rozsa Centre at the University of Calgary. It's recommended for children between five and 12 years old, but everyone is welcome.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for everyone else. You can pick them up at the door or online right here.

Theatre for adults

Morpheus Theatre's new show is not a little risqu it's a lot risqu. It's called Skin Flick, need I say more?

It's billed as the hilarious story of five ordinary people caught up in the business of making a porn film. They have a special Valentine's Day performance if you are looking for something a little different on Feb. 14.

The show opens Friday and runs until Feb. 18 at The Pumphouse Theatre.

How about a song?

The Calgary Civic Symphony has increased its ranks by 300, thanks to the Mount Royal Kantorei, Cum Vino Cantus, The Ukrainian Male Chorus of Edmonton and members of The University of Calgary and Calgary Youth Orchestras.

This one is worth it.It's the kind of piece that sends chills through your entire body.

On Sunday, they're taking over the Jack Singer Concert Hall for a performance of Gustav Mahler's Resurrection Symphony No. 2.
