Driver charged with 2nd-degree murder in hit-and-run that killed teen

Calgary police have charged adriver with second-degree murder and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death in relation to an incident earlier this month that claimed the life of a teenager.

The driver, 37-year-oldUdhamSandhu, is toappear in court on June 4.

During a Thursday press conference, Staff Sgt. Colin Chisholm said the charges are the result of a lengthy investigation based on information provided by the public.

"This investigation is ongoing," Chisholm said. "Anyone with information, contact police. We are grateful for everyone who has come forward to this date."

Two people were arrested in connection with the incident, Chisholm said, though the second person who was taken into custody was released without charges on Friday. Both are known to police.

Rollover incident

On May 13 at approximately 2:30 a.m. at southbound52nd Street at 16th Avenue N.E., a 2010 Dodge Journey was struck from behind by a 2008 Buick Allure, sending the Journey across the centre median.

Fifteen-year-old Ibaad Yarwas ejected from the vehicle anddied at the scene.

The Buick remainedfor a short time before its occupants fled the scene, and the vehicle was found unoccupied later in the day in the Saddle Ridge area.

An online funeral was held for Yaron May 15. His best friend,Zabbie Safari, told CBC News that Yar was well-liked and loved to makepeople laugh.

"He was a beloved son, a loyal brother, he will be missed by everyone," said Yar's fatherIsmailduring Thursday's press conference. "He took all our joys with him, and our home and hearts are empty without him."

Yar's sisterAasmasaid she still can't make sense of what happened.

"I'm used to him being so loud and so goofy a heart like that is very rare," Aasma said. "It doesn't feel real that I'm looking down at the grave of my 15-year-old brother."

Police are still looking to contact a number of people in a Chevrolet Tahoe seen at a residence in the Saddler Rdge area before and after the event.

"These people are believed to have knowledge of the incident,"Chisholm said. "The actions that night have led to tragic consequences and we remain committed to uncovering how this all came to be."
