Crews respond to 5 suspicious grass fires in northeast Calgary

The actions of employees from a number of northeast Calgary businesses helped to contain a number of suspicious fires that otherwise could have damaged nearby buildings on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Calgary Fire Department.

Local businesses used extinguishers and hoses to battle flames before crews arrived

Employees from three businesses in northeast Calgary used water hoses, fire extinguishers and a water truck to help contain several suspicious grass fires on Wednesday, according to the Calgary Fire Department. (Google Maps)

The actions of employees from several northeast Calgary businesses helped to contain a number of suspicious fires that otherwise could have damaged nearby buildings on Wednesday, according to the Calgary Fire Department.

Just before 2:30 p.m., Calgary 911 started receiving calls about multiple spot fires near McKnightBoulevard and Edmonton Trail in northeast Calgary.

Those fires were in grassy areas and had the potential to damage nearby buildings ifnot caught quickly, the fire department said.

Employees from Fix Auto Calgary Coachworks North used a water hose to contain one of the fires, while employees from PartSource used store fire extinguishers to contain another.

Meanwhile, employees from Varsity Chrysler used a water truck and fire extinguishers to contain a third blaze.

The fire department said in a release there werefive fires reported in the area, none of which were deemed accidental.

Fire crews arrived on scene and extinguished all the flames. The fires are now under investigation by the fire department and the Calgary police.
