Man sent to hospital after southeast industrial fire

One man was sent to hospital with smoke inhalation injuries after mechanical work at a southeast Calgary industrial building sparked a fire on Thursday morning.

According to a release, Calgary fire crews responded to the building located in the6400 block of 42nd Street S.E. at approximately 9:40 a.m.

"When [crews] arrived at the large industrial building, smoke was visible and filling the building," the release reads.

According to the release, it's believed the fire started as a result of mechanical work that accidentally ignited some insulation. The fire proceeded to travel inside the wall and ceiling.

Crews were forced to cut areas of the metal roof and wall in multiple areas of the building in order to access and extinguish the fire.Electricity was shut off while firefighters battled the flames.

Six workers were evacuated from the building. EMS transported the man with smoke inhalation injuries to hospital.

No other workers were injured, but fire crews remained at the scene and checked for hot spots using a thermal imaging camera.
