Calgary Herald newsroom staff cut by third

Financial belt tightening has resulted in the Calgary Herald laying off about one third of its newsroom employees.

Financial belt tightening has resulted in the Calgary Herald laying off about one third of its newsroom employees.

The 30 job cuts are across the board in the editorial department: writers, photographers, sports and editors, said Editor-in-Chief Lorne Motley.

The move is part of Post Media's plan to centralize production of its newspapers in Hamilton, he said.

National pages will be produced there while the papers across the country concentrate on local news, Motley said.

"We have by far the biggest newsroom in the city and we remain at least double the size of anyone else and we will continue to cover the local community in depth and reflect Calgary in our newspaper each and every day," he said.

The layoffs also tie in with the recent decision to stop publishing Sunday Herald. The last edition is this weekend.
