Thieves broke into a home in northeast Calgary and bear sprayedthe elderly homeowner, before taking off in his car, police and family members say.

At around 1:40 p.m. on Tuesday, two men broke into the home in the 100 block of Castleridge Road, the homeowner's nephew Kevin Chiu told CBC News.

When the uncle confronted them, they sprayed him in the face with bear spray, and then took off in his car, a red Hyundai.

"He smashed right through the door," Chiu said. "The whole garage is busted."

Chiu said his biggest concern was for his 62-year-old uncle, but he believes the pair also took some money, his wallet and other valuables.

"It's really horrible," Chiu said, adding that his uncle was "scared and frustrated."

Chiu says the family has lived in the home for about two years, and that the neighbourhood has seen its share of problems in that time.
