Calgary MLA Jonathan Denis endorses Jim Prentice for PC Leader

Alberta Justice Minister Jonathan Denis said Sunday night he will not be running to be the leader of the province's Progressive Conservative party.

Alberta Justice Minister Jonathan Denis said Sunday night he will not be seeking the leadership of the province's Progressive Conservative party, but is instead supportingJim Prentice in his bid to lead the party.

The Calgary-Acadia MLA confirmed his intentions in a statement late Sunday evening. Denis said over the last few months, he'shad many conversation with residents in his constituency about the future of Alberta.

"I amgrateful for the support I have received to seek the leadership of theProgressive Conservative party," the statement reads.I have decided that I will not be standing as a candidate in the 2014Progressive Conservative leadership race."

Since being elected in 2008, Denis said he's offered a common sense, conservativeapproach as an MLA and as the Minister of Housing, Solicitor General, andAttorney General. He said his team has "heard from many Albertans who want a leaderwitha vision of smaller government, safer communities, and living within ourmeans."

"I believe Jim Prentice shares this perspective I will be supporting him forleader of our party and our next Premier," said Denis.

Denis is now in his second term as an MLA. He currently serves asMinister of Justice and Solicitor General.
