One man has been hospitalized after being shot by a Calgary police officer following an incident that started late Wednesday in the city's northwest, police said in a news release early Thursday.

Police responded to a weapons complaint in the 0-100 block of Varsity Estates Circle N.W. at 11:42 p.m.

Officers located a man in a parkade but were unsuccessful in an attempt to "de-escalate the situation over an extended period of time," police said.

"The situation ultimately escalated to a point that an officer discharged their service weapon. The man was immediately given medical care by officers and EMS who were on scene, and the man has since been transported to hospital in serious but stable condition."

Police said an injured officer was also treated on scene.

The provincial police watchdog the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is now investigating.
