Calgary police caution drivers on icy winter roads after multiple collisions Saturday morning

Calgary police say drivers should use caution as the city works to clear slippery roads.

Emergency Medical Servicesresponded to four motor vehicle collisions throughout the city between 6 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The cause of the collisions was yet to be determined, said EMS public education officer Adam Loria.

EMS said paramedics responded tocollisions at:

• Shaganappi Trail near John Laurie Blvd. N.W.
• Crowchild Trail S.W. on the bridge over Bow Trail
• Memorial Drive near the 4th Ave flyover
• Deerfoot Trail near 17 Ave S.E.

Any injuries resulting from the incidents were minor and non-life threatening, said Loria.

Police say an incident, which temporarily closed Crowchild Trail between Memorial Drive and 17th Ave. S.W., was caused by weather conditions and multiple collisions.

Police say there were four vehicles involved, and one was a police cruiser.

City crews are working on trouble spots such as bridge decks, ramps and intersections on the main routes, and priority routes including Kensington Road and Acadia Drive, Tara Norton-Merrin, said City of Calgary roads communications planner in an emailed statement.

As crews are focusing on priority routes, some roads may be icy and snow-covered, especially in residential areas.

At this time, the city does not anticipate the need to call a snow route parking ban.
