Calgary police identify victim and lay charges in Radisson Heights homicide

Police say a man has been charged in the shooting death of39-year-old Jamie OLeary in the southeast Calgary neighborhood of Radisson Heights on Friday.

Charges have been laidin the shooting death of a 39-year-old man Friday in the Calgary community of Radisson Heights, police say.

In a statement on Monday, police said the victim has beenidentified asJamie O'Leary, confirmed after an autopsy conducted bythe Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Tarek Che Sharples, 39, has been charged with second-degree murder.

Police believe the two men knew each other and that O'Leary's deathwas the result of an ongoing dispute.

Sharples appeared in court on Monday morning.

"This has been an incredibly busy time for our investigators who have dealt with six homicides over a two-week period," said Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the Calgary Police Service's homicideunit.

Police were called to the 100 block of Radcliffe Close S.E. around 1:30 p.m. on Friday after reports of gunshots.

Emergency responders found O'Leary in life-threatening condition. He died shortly afterward.

After the incident, security camera images of a beige or grey Chevrolet Venture minivanbelieved to be connected to the shooting were released by investigators.

On Sunday, police said the vehicle had been locatedand that an arrest hadbeen made.

Officers are investigating two other recent shooting deaths in the citya man in his 20s who diedafter being shot inCrescent Heights on Friday, and the homicide of 16-year-oldJal Acor Jal.

Police do not believe that the three deaths are connected.
