Officials are urging caution as the Bow River opens amid hot summer weather.

Despite the ban being lifted on the Bow River, police are still urging extreme caution and will be out monitoring activity along the river over the weekend.

Water levels have dropped and people are being allowed on the river for recreational use but police say conditions remain dangerous and could pose a significant risk to anyone on the river in any type of watercraft.

Debris in the water poses an extreme hazard and water clarity is low, obscuring hazards and obstacles just below the surface.

Due to these conditions, police will be monitoring activity along the river and willset upstations at various parks and pathways where rafters start and finish their trips.

Their main purpose will be to deal with any safety issues before rafters get into the water.

These could include issues of water safety, public behaviour and public alcohol consumption.
