Calgary's Green line route to be studied further

Selecting the way Calgary's next LRT line will someday get through downtown will have to wait. A city council committee decided Wednesday that it wants more information on options for getting the southeast and north ends of the Green line to link up.

Selecting the way Calgary's nextLRTline will someday get through downtown will have to wait.

A city council committee decided Wednesday that it wants more information on options for getting the southeast and north ends of the Green line to link up.

Councillors on the transportation and transit committee asked questions about four possible options which include various tunnels, an elevated section and even using the 99-year-old Centre Street bridge to get the C-Train across the Bow River.

There was a bid by Coun.SeanChuto eliminate the Centre Street Bridge option from the list but the committee voted against that, opting to allow further study on all four options.

A report is due back at the committee by the end of this year. Planning work on the futureLRTline started in 2011. So far, Calgary Transit officials say $1.75 million has been spent on planning work.

No date has been set for construction. There is currently no money in the city's capital plans for the nextLRT line.
