Standoff at home in Temple in northeast Calgary ends with charges

A man is facing charges after he brandished a handgun at a police officer in the northeast community of Temple, sparking an eight-hour standoff this morning, Calgary police say.

A man is facing charges after he brandished a handgun at a police officer in the northeast community of Temple, sparking an eight-hourstandoff this morning, Calgarypolice say.

Six other people have also been taken into custody in connection with the incident in the 200-block ofTemplebowPlace N.E., andpolice are obtaining a warrant to search the property.

Police say they were called to the house just after 2 a.m. in response toa noise complaint.

While an officer was conducting a traffic stop, a man came out of the home and brandished a handgun,police said in a release.

The man then went back into the home, with several others inside, and refused to come out despite repeated calls from police over a megaphone.

"It was loud all night,"saidRicardoMendoza, who lives next door to the house.

"The police were there, every two ... three minutes, telling them they were under arrest."

Mendozatold CBC Newshis family was told to hide in the basement.

"At around3:30a.m. we got a phone call from police saying that we have to move to the basement, because there was an incident with the neighbours and it wasn't safe to be around the house," Mendoza said.

Police saidseven people were taken into custody, including the man who faces weapons charges.

During the standoff,police had blocked off access to a three-block area surrounding the homeand were keeping media and residents out.
