Calgary voter turnout surges compared to 2011 federal election

Elections Canada is still validating the final numbers, but it appears voter turnout in Calgary in Monday's federal election is upfrom the previous vote in 2011.

A total of 583,160 votes were tallied across Calgary's 10 ridings in 2015, up from the 419,714 ballots cast across eight city ridings in 2011 that's an increase of 163,446 votes.

There were 95,398 more voters on the electors list in 2015, but that doesn't include people who registered to vote at a polling station on election day.

Preliminary voter turnout across the city came in at 69.4 per cent.

That figurewill come down slightly, however, once the last-minute registrants are factored in, says Elections Canada spokesperson Leanne Nyirfaas it will increase the total number of eligible voters (the denominator in the voter turnout calculation.)

Calgary's final voter turnout in the 2011 federal electionwas 56.4 per cent.

Calgary Confederation had the highest preliminary turnout of all city ridings in this election, ringing in at 75.2 per cent. Calgary Forest Lawn was the lowest at 55 per cent.
