Calgary area hammered with rain, hail but no tornado developed

Extreme weather battered Calgary area Saturday evening, after Environment Canada issued a warning just before 8 p.m.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for several southern Alberta communities and a tornado watch was in place for the Calgary area for a time.

"Thunderstorms are developing over southern Alberta this evening, with some of these storms showing signs of rotation," Environment Canada said.

"This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation.Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches."

"A developing weather system over the northwestern United States has moved into southern Alberta today causing showers with some embedded thunderstorms to develop," Environment Canada said.

"It is expected that most places will receive an additional 20 to 30 mm of rain overnight with total accumulations of up to 40 mm by morning. Due to the convective nature of the rain amounts will vary considerably from place to place and some localities may receive 50 mm or more."
