Calgary's Canada Day schedule is out and it's packed with music, food and fun

The City of Calgary has released the schedule for Canada Day and this year it features a concert by Corb Lund and a full day of events on Prince's Island Park.

Free venues across the city will be jam-packed with Canadian musical acts, cultural programs, activities for kids and lots of food offerings.

The July 1 celebration of Canada's Confederation kicks off with events at Fort Calgary starting at 9 a.m. MT.

CBC Calgary food columnist Julie Van Rosendaal hosts a concert series at the main tent with local artists such as Rotary Park, Mariel Buckley and La Mosca, among others.The first 1,000 guests will receive free scones.

The opening ceremony begins at Fort Calgary at 10 a.m., as does the Bow River Paddling Race and a wide range of activities for families.

Other places in the city will be busy with music and events, including the Stephen Avenue Walk and Olympic Plaza, East Village StreetFair, Studio Bell and the King Eddy, the Calgary Central Library, Eau Claire Market Plaza and the Chinese Cultural Centre.

At Prince's Island Park, Francophone and Indigenous communities will host a large variety of activities, including dancing, elder teachings, arts and crafts, drumming, music, medicine wheel teaching, history lessons and lots of music.

The park will also host a military showcase and a Sikh turban-wrapping demonstration, among other cultural activities.

The Canada Day concert offers a full evening of entertainment starting at 6:30 p.m. MT. It begins with a sing-a-long of One City, One Voice with surprise performers.

Corb Lund headlines the free concert on Riverfront Avenue, after feature guests Shred Kelly and Alex Cuba perform.

The day's events end with a 15-minute firework display off the Centre Street Bridge.

Road closures

The City of Calgary warns there will be road closures around downtown Calgary to accommodate the festivities.

"We really encourage people, if you don't need to drive, leave the car at home, take transit down,"Sarah Iley, manager of arts and culture at the City of Calgary, said Friday.

"If you are driving down, be mindful of the fact that when everybody goes to leave when the fireworks are over, it will take some time to get out of the downtown."
