Calgary man accused of stabbing woman in front of daughter denied bail

The man accused of trying to kill a Calgary mother in front of her 10-year-old daughter was denied bailon Tuesday.

Nurdin Dossa, 68, faces charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault after allegedly attacking Anila Malak, the ex-wife of a former business partner, in her Coral Springs home last month.

Alberta provincial court Judge PatMcIlhargeydenied Dossa's bid for freedom after hearing submissions from defence lawyer David Chow andCrown prosecutor Christa White.

The daughter was credited by police with saving her mother's life after sheran outside and alerted nearby workers who called 911.

Malakwas still being attacked when officers arrived, police said at the time.

Police said Dossa and Malak's ex-husband were business associates years ago.

There were initial mental health concerns, but Dossa's lawyer says he has been cleared by a forensic psychiatrist to stand trial.

Malak, 41, suffered severe injuries to her face and neck in the attack.

The evidence that was presented at the bail hearing is protected by a publication ban in order to protect Dossa's right to a fair trial.

He will be back in court in the new year.
