A man who was found in medical distress on a road in southeast Calgary early Wednesday morning and later died in hospital was the victim of a hit-and-run collision with a truck, police believe.

Emergency crews were called to the 1700 block of 35th Street S.E. in Southview at about 5:10 a.m. on Wednesday.

EMS took the man to hospital, where he later died.

Police said in a release Thursday that the investigation has revealed that the 34-year-old man had left a bar in the area.

It's believed that he was holding onto the door handle of a departing red truck when he fell alongside the vehicle and was run over by it.

The driver of the truck left the scene and then returned a short time later to check on the man, police said.

The driver and the vehicle have now been located.

Police said the incident is still being investigated by the Calgary Police Service Traffic Section and that no further information will be shared at this time.

Police are asking anyone with information to call authorities.
